Understanding BMI
BMI is a screening tool that indicates whether you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese for your height. While useful, BMI doesn't directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, bone density, or overall body composition. Consequently, BMI gives a good estimate of total body fat for most people, but it doesn’t work well for everybody. There are other factors that should be considered when determining an ideal weight for someone. Very muscular people can have a high BMI because of their muscle mass, even though they’re not necessarily overweight. Alternatively, BMI can also underestimate body fat in people who have lost muscle mass. If you have a high BMI you should be see a health care provider. They can use other factors such as body fat measurements, waist size, evaluations of diet and family health problems, and other factors to find out if someone’s weight might pose health risks.
Important: BMI is a general indicator and may not be accurate for athletes, pregnant women, elderly individuals, or children. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized health advice.
